Want to see what all the hub-bub is about with Windows 7 beta? Rip that baby up on your ubuntu!
Firstly – grab the Windows 7 ISO and burn that DVD.
Then:
Grab VirtualBox 2.1 (the 2.0.4 version that came with 8.10 won’t do) and install it.
Setup with a Windows OS and list Vista 64bit as the specific operating system.
I used a 1GB memory and a 10GB dynamic hard drive partition.
Go to town installing Windows 7!
I’ll figure out how to install Guest Additions – haven’t got there yet!
I followed Steve’s earlier post about SDLMame – which by the way is much more involved on 64 bit… but anyways, got it working… I think. After messing around with config and crap and not having any 128u7 roms I said “screw this crap“.
I installed Wine and went back to my trusty Mame32. It’s a complete front/back end – at mame ver 101 (like 3-4 years old), but I don’t really care because there’s only like 30 games I ever want to play and I have them all for mame 101. So I’m happy. Config is a breeze and took like literally 30 seconds and I was playing some kick-ass old-school games from yesteryear on my 32″ LCD! Woot!
Here’s some action shots right from my desktop to yours! Froshizzle.
The Gnome screen capture function works slick while you play… just keep hammering that “print-scr” key! Cheers!
In terminal type the following:
echo “deb http://rowdy.dfreer.org:8080 hardy main” | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
wget http://rowdy.dfreer.org:8080/7572013D.gpd -O- | sudo apt-key add –
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install zsnes32
zsnes32 -ad oss (for the first run from terminal)
zsnes32 (for every other subsequent run)
This is some dude’s private server/package, so who knows if this will be up forever.. but it works flawlessly for me.
And for a treat – here’s a nice little relative icon for you to use on your desktop! Enjoy!
This is the story of a determined man who built a nice computer system for another determined man. The first determined man thought it would be swell if he could unshackle the second determined man from the evil corporation that controls computerinterwebland. The second determined man listened intently, wrote feverishly on a notepad and seemed to find utopia in Ubuntu. The path was laid by the first determined man for the second determined man to follow… and follow he did.
All seemed well for a few hours… as the second determined man took his computer on the path. The path became muddy, overgrown… he became lost, troubled, cranky… was he made mockery of? Was this Ubuntu all an illusionist lie from the underground movement? How could he find his way without master Googleman? The interweb was not reachable, he could not see or function.
His cries for help went unanswered for days until a third determined man arrived on the scene with his mind muscle, tools and his snappy wits. The second and third determined man tussled ever so gently while reaching an agreement that they would hack and slash the underbrush and find the path to freedom yet again.
They then came across an evil-doer in the form of a Dlink DIR-655 routerbitch. This routerbitch did not like the second determined man’s computer network interface. The third determined man flashed the evil routerbitch with his naughty firmware bits and the battle was won. Googleman was consulted. Googleman instructed the third determined man on the ways of horribly disfigured eudorapile. Eudorapile was overcome by banishing it in a familiar virtual box world from a previous century.
The third determined man left the second determined man to fend for himself for a few days, while leaving his calling card if assistance was required again. The second determined man continued on the path to enlightenment…
The End.
To install Java Runtime 6:
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin
This is needed for Openoffice 3 to completely install…
As for Openoffice,
1) go to www.openoffice.org
2) Download the .DEB files for Openoffice
3) Extract Openoffice
4) Open terminal, and navigate to the extraction point (/home/jason/Downloads/’Openoffice Folder Name’/DEBS)
5) Run “sudo dpkg -i *.deb”
If you have problems with your update manager trying to install useless packages and partial updates that don’t seem to ever friggen install… here’s how to wipe it clean and get a fresh start on life:
Open terminal and type “sudo apt-get clean all”
(This will flush the update manager cache)
Then type “sudo apt-get autoremove”
(This will remove all orphan packages, probably from programs you installed and then uninstalled, or packages that have no linkages to anything and are just taking up space).
Then, to reset the update manager type “sudo apt-get update” and “sudo apt-get upgrade”
That is all. Be gone with you.
Steve and I were chatting about the sketchiness that is Ubuntu themes and how if you change themes shit just randomly seems to stop working. This is obviously one thing they need to work on. The theme i use is Dust, which i think is pretty solid, and doesn’t cause any problems. There is actually an effort by some to make this the official Ubuntu theme.

Gui Version
I found one front-end kxmame in the Ubuntu Add/Remove Application list but I haven’t tried it yet. kxmame looks just like a unix version of mame 32.
Standard Command Line Version without the command line
I have installed sdlmame it is a good up to date version of mame that is very stable and performs well, The problem is the command line version doesn’t have a GUI. Here’s a way to use sdlmame without the command line.
Step 1 : Install sdlmame
1. Click Applications > Add Remove
2. Type sdlmame into the search field
3. Install that bad boy!
Step 2 : Adding sdlmame as a Launcher
Right click on any MAME ROM (in its zipped format) on your Desktop, Network or File Manager, then click “Open With > Open with Other Application”. Click the arrow beside “Use a custom command”.
Step 3 : Running ROMS
Right Click on any rom and now you have the option of “Open with sdlmame” in your command line. Warining you don’t get errors when opening any roms that aren’t built for the current version of mame they just start to load get to 100% and then it closes. ie I have an old version of one rom and it won’t work because it is missing some files.
Resized it probably looks like ass, but click it for the full effect.
Running 1920×1200 on my 24″
The fancy dancy applets on the desktop is gDesklets which you can get from the Add/Remove Applications. Don’t add the rss feed one though, i tried pulling TSN feeds, and it just kills the applets. Also, don’t install a lot of themes, Ubuntu doesn’t seem to like that either. I’ve given up on trying to find something different. I’ll stick with my dark brown “Dusk” theme.
