Get Addicted to Nicotine – Hookers Do It, Why Can’t You?

So, why call this application “Nicotine”? Why not call it “Soulseek for Ubuntu” or something that makes sense? I guess the author’s angle is that nicotine is a addictive chemical… and downloading free music that you should be paying for is a rush for most folks… like public nudity or getting an Amy Winehouse tattoo.

Open up your trusty terminal and type: sudo apt-get install nicotine

When it’s done infecting your system with a program that can steal copyrighted works for free, you will find it in “Applications > Internet > Nicotine-Plus”

Note: it amazes me how much “neil diamond” there is on the soulseek network. Huh…

Some Further Notes: Don’t forget to initially go to the “Edit > Settings” and set your download and share directories. Again I found that if you are downloading/sharing a NTFS mounted partition, and it has spaces in the partition name, it can cause weirdness to happen. I find that compared to the soulseek client for windows, that this is much faster… downloading songs on average at 140k/sec.

Port Range: the application will work without opening a port range on your firewall, but I find that having the ports open will net you bigger returns in your searching. To find out what ports it needs, go to the “Edit > Settings > Server” item. Also, there are two options for Soulseek, the 2240 (old network) and the 2242 (new network). The 2242 is a much more refined search, but has half the users, so my vote is to stay with the 2240 network.

One More Thing: When you perform a search, find what your looking for… you’d think when you kill the tab for that search that it would stop with that search… but NOOOOO like a STD that keeps giving, it keeps searching and searching and searching. You have to first click the “Ignore” button first prior to killing the particular search tab.
